DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. -- A Dinwiddie man, still mourning the loss of his father, was devastated Monday after he came home to a ransacked house and his father’s ashes spread across his kitchen floor.
Sometime before 2 p.m. Monday, a thief or thieves broke into the home, went through kitchen cabinets, drawers and closets looking for anything of value they could grab.
"The door knob was across the room" said Johnathan Rainey, who stood at the back door of his Dinwiddie County home.

Rainey took CBS 6 reporter Wayne Covil through his home where he said the robbers went through his room and closet.
"They did take my bows and my guns, which were over against this wall," said Rainey.
The crooks also grabbed a TV, a jar full of change, and fishing poles that belonged to Johnathan's father, Richard Rainey.
But it's what they broke that has left the Rainey Family with heartache.
"My dad's urn was sitting here" said Johnathan pointed to a living room table, with photographs and candles.

Richard Rainey died just eight months ago, in September 2015.
"They actually took the urn, and it looks as if they, took it and smashed it right here on the kitchen floor," Johnathan said.
The urn, a small wooden box, with laser engraving and a picture of Richard, was sealed tight with wood screws. The urn broke open, the bag split open and Johnathan said the ashes "spread from the carpet to under the kitchen table."

“The urn and his ashes, why did they do that? That's definitely something you don't mess with, someone's family like that, it's definitely not right," he said.
Johnathan said he understood it would take a long time to replace the hunting and fishing gear he had shared with his father over the years, but hoped to one day get back to what he and his dad loved to do together.

CBS 6 contacted J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, who handled Richard Rainey's Funeral. Tommy Peters tells CBS 6 they will replace the Urn for the family.
