Henrico swears in new police chief as Middleton says goodbye: ‘It leaves an impression on your heart’

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- The Henrico police chief admired by his brothers and sisters in blue said farewell to the department he served for over 40 years Friday morning.

Both Henrico Police and Fire Departments gathered at the steps of the Public Safety Building for a final inspection and to honor outgoing Chief Doug Middleton.

"When you put the uniform on for the last time it leaves an impression on your heart," Middleton said fighting back tears. “The thing that drives me every day is to come to work and do what I can do to make a difference in your life.”

Middleton, who ascended to chief position in 2011, will become Henrico’s new Deputy County Manager for Public Safety.

“He`s put his heart and soul in the community helping others,” Captain John Coover said.

As Middleton transitions to his new role, Deputy Chief Humberto Cardounel was sworn in Friday afternoon.

“I told him he has the all the confidence in the world that he has the skill set and capacity to do this job,” Middleton said.
