HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Police identified the man killed at the intersection of Gaskins Road and Springfield Road in Henrico's West End as 69-year-old Wendell F. Davis, of E. Ladies Mile Road.

Davis was killed Thursday night, at about 8:53 p.m., while riding his bicycle.

Family members told CBS 6 reporter Jon Burkett that Davis was always in high spirits.

They also said that he had traveled out to see his daughter in the West End.

He typically put his bike on the bus, and then rode the rest of the way. He had intended to ride the bus back home, but family said he missed the bus and was out biking.

It's an area not well-suited for pedestrians or bicycles at night, without separate travels or bright lights.

"A Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling east on Gaskins Road when it struck a cyclist who was riding on the left side of the right lane," Henrico Police spokesman Lt. Chris Eley said. "Members of the Henrico Police Crash Team continue to investigate this accident. Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in this crash."

"He loved life so much, always on that bike... [he] always came by to converse," said Alvin Hope, who runs the barbershop next to where Davis lived. "He'd do anything for you; he was truly a kind human being."
