CHARLES CITY, Va. — A 75-year-old man driving a moped died Friday in a fatal crash that temporarily closed part of Roxbury Road (Route 106) at Wayside Road (Route 607) in Charles City county.
State Police said that the fatal crash occurred between a dump truck and moped, around 12:27 p.m. The bike was seen with shattered parts strewn about, and on its side.
A 2009 Yamaha moped travelling west on Route 607 (Wayside Road) approached the intersection ,stopped then pulled into the path of a 1997 Kenworth tractor trailer that was headed south on Route 106 (Roxbury Road).
The tractor trailer attempted to avoid but struck the moped, according to police.
The driver of 1997 Kenworth, Robert W. Kee, 49 of Richmond, Va., was not injured; he was wearing a seatbelt.
The operator of the moped, Alfred D. Johnson, 75 of Charles City County was transported to MCV where he died from injuries sustained in the crash. He was wearing a helmet, police said.
A dump truck was spotted on scene and it had to be towed out of the woods.
Police said that no charges will be made.
