Bernie Sanders does an election jig in Scott’s Addition

Posted

RICHMOND, Va. – Bernie Sanders was spotted doing an election jig across from the CBS 6 studio, on the border of Scott’s Addition.

The Democratic socialist senator may stand six feet tall, but artist Mickael Broth has painted a towering politician on the two-story building which nests at the corner of Broad Street and Mactavish Avenue.

The slender senator’s stance looks as though he's in a mosh pit, though he’s repping in a nice suit the donkey-blue of his affiliation -- for this presidential race -- and his shirt is still tucked in; tie flapping in the breeze of what his supporters hope is a successful Wisconsin primary day.

[Note: Sen. Bernie Sanders won the Wisconsin Democratic primary.]

While the Virginia primary has passed, the mural went up on the day that Sanders hopes to defeat Hillary Clinton in the Wisconsin primary. Or, as the mural declares, on a day that supporters hope the Clinton camp will “Feel the Bern.”

The Highpoint Gallery has been a low-key tenant, inhabiting the sprawling complex at 3300 Broad Street for a couple of years and hosting several art events. It was owner David Morrison's idea to have artists create the Sanders' murals.

In the late afternoon Tuesday, well-known artist Hamilton Glass began work on his rendition of Bernie, and bird, which will adorn the part of the building beside the now defunct Sea Dream leather shop.

The templates for both murals have been posted online, “for those supporters who wish to project the images onto buildings, trace them, and color them in to show their support for Bernie Sanders.”

You can find the templates full size, and contact info, here.

This graphic template on the left was created by Hamilton Glass and the one on the right was created by Michael Broth and both are open for public use in instance where no profit is to be made. It is covered under a Creative Commons license non-commercial use, share alike.

The artists ask only that the images not “in anyway be re-created for the purposes of making a profit and the artists should be credited for their work.”

Glass said he hoped to finish his mural on Wednesday.
