HANOVER COUNTY, Va. – A 28-year-old man has been arrested on second-degree murder charges in connection with a man’s death in Hanover County earlier this month.

Deputies were called to the 15400 block of Mountain Road on March 18 for a report of a man in cardiac arrest.

When crews arrived, they found 59-year-old John Cassells Jr. lying on the ground beside a truck.

He was transported to an area hospital where he later died of his injuries.

“The investigation revealed an altercation between the victim and suspect,” Sergeant James R. Cooper, Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, said. “The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head. While an arrest has been made, investigators continue to collect information in support of this case.”

Officials said interviews led to Jesse Patrick Booth’s arrest Wednesday. He was charged with second-degree murder.

Booth is being held without bond at the at Pamunkey Regional Jail.

“I am extremely proud of the countless hours our investigators spent on this investigation,” Colonel David R. Hines, the Hanover County Sheriff, said “It is my hope that this arrest brings some form of closure to Mr. Cassell’s family and friends.”
