NEW KENT, Va. – It took a CSX cargo train approximately one mile to get to a complete stop after hurtling into a truck stuck on the tracks.
Fortunately the driver and passenger of the truck were not inside the vehicle and the time of impact.
“I wanted to pass this along, it happened last night in New Kent County but I felt it was important to stress the use of approved crossings and the dangers involved if you don’t,” wrote Sgt. Steve Vick, with Virginia State Police.
The incident occurred at South Waterside Drive and Wingapo, mile marker CA54, in New Kent County, around 9 p.m. Thursday.
A 1988 blue Chevrolet pickup attempted to drive over the train tracks at mile marker CA54 when the vehicle got stuck on the tracks.
The CSX Cargo train was unable to stop and struck the pickup. It took the train over a mile to come to a complete stop, police said.
The 20 year old driver of the pickup and a passenger were not in the vehicle when it was struck and were not injured. The driver of the pickup was charged trespassing on a railroad track.
The train stopped over a mile east of striking location.
