Petersburg School Board approves proposal to close Vernon Johns Junior High School

PETERSBURG, Va. -- The Petersburg School Board voted to close Vernon Johns Junior High School during a School board meeting Wednesday night.

Acting Petersburg Superintendent Linda Shifflette previously proposed a plan to close the school as a way to help save money and to improve student performance.

Under the agreed plan sixth, seventh, and eighth graders will head to Peabody Middle School.

The Petersburg Schools central office will move to the Vernon John’s Site. The school will also house the Blandford gifted program central offices.

The school will close after the 2015-16 school year. Petersburg schools system is expected to save around $40,000 per year.
