Man arrested after shooting inside Chesterfield apartment complex

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. --- A man is facing charges after opening fire inside a Chesterfield apartment complex.

Officers arrested Yeison Medina-Cruz in connection with the incident. He has been charged with reckless handling of a firearm, but additional charges are being considered.

Officers responded to reports of a shots fired in the 7500 block of Bannockbarn Drive in the Chesterfield Village Apartment complex off  Midlothian Turnpike near Chippenham Parkway around 1:20 am Saturday morning.

Witnesses reporting hearing gunshots inside the complex, responding officers also heard shots upon arrival.

Based on the nature of the call, the Police SWAT and negotiation teams responded to the scene.

Police blocked off the entrance to the apartment complex and neighbors were unable to enter or leave until the situation was resolved.

Some neighbors were forced to wait out the ordeal at a nearby gas station.

They made several attempts to make contact with the residents and eventually took Medina-Cruz into custody without incident.
