HANOVER, Va. – There was a round applause as Erin Sturgis was suprised with a new car from Patrick Auto.
She wasn’t out shopping, she was there being honored. Sturgis was just nominated “Teacher of the Year” at Hanover Public Schools. Sturgis, who teaches tenth and twelfth-grade classes has been teaching in Hanover for eight years.
She got to pick one of three cars offered by the Patrick Auto Group.
"I am incredibly honored and surprised, and very excited," Sturgis said.
For the ninth consecutive year, Patrick has honored the HCPS Teacher of the Year by providing the winner with a new vehicle -- for a year -- which includes all insurance and maintenance costs.
"We feel very fortunate to give the Hanover County Teacher of the Year a free vehicle," said Michael Patrick, owner of Patrick Buick GMC.
"We are incredibly thankful for Patrick, for our business partners, who recognize the good work of our teachers," said Dr. Michael B. Gill,
Hanover County Schools Superintendent.
Sturgis picked out her car on Wednesday afternoon, at the Hanover Center for Trades and Technology in Mechanicsville.
