CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Henry Page Mauck III, 57, of Midlothian, was killed Saturday when his 1993 Subaru Legacy ran off Old Gun Road and hit a tree, according to Chesterfield Police. Mauck was alone in the car when it crashed. Police were called to the accident scene before 8 a.m.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Mauck was a math teacher at Trinity Episcopal.
CBS 6 spoke with Rob Short, head of Trinity Episocpal Monday afternoon.
He knew Mauck, who went by Page, for nearly 30 years. Short said Mauck had been a teacher for over 30 years, most recently teaching calculus.
"He's also taught computer modeling, computer programming, many different levels of mathematics and he's influenced the kids in so many ways," said Short.
Mauck was a father of two children and loved the outdoors.
"We would always go on hikes together or kayaking and have a wonderful time," said Short.
"It was with great shock and sadness that I learned of the loss of Page Mauck, an accomplished math instructor and long-time faculty member, who died in a car accident Saturday, March 12. As a colleague and close friend of Page, I struggle to find words to adequately capture the grief that we all feel," Trinity Episcopal's Head of School Robert Short wrote in an email. "Trinity has lost someone very special: a champion of our sustainability and outdoor program, a helping hand with technology, a mentor, a coach, and a great listener. For over 30 years, he filled many roles, touched many lives in profound ways and offered a kind smile and a helping hand to many in need."
The school has provided grief counselors to students and staff coping with the sudden loss.
"In the coming days, we will be in close contact with the Mauck family and will inform the larger community about the services the family is planning," he wrote. "While this is a difficult time for us all, we are grateful for the love that binds our school community together and the strength we draw from each other -- teachers, staff, alumni, parents, and students."
The crash, along the 3600 block of Old Gun Road, happened about three miles from Mr. Mauck's Keith Lane home.
In lieu of flowers, Mauck's family is asking that memorial gifts be made in his honor to Trinity Episcopal School to support the programs so important to him, such as the outdoors, sustainability, STEM teaching, robotics, and mentoring and coaching young people.
