CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- An added police presence might be visible at Matoaca High School in Chesterfield Tuesday after threats were made via email. The exact nature of those threats was not made public, but the mere mention had some parents concerned enough to keep their children away from school Tuesday.

In an email to parents, Matoaca principal Belinda Merriman let them know police arrived at the school Monday afternoon to investigate the threats.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we may have additional officers at school on Tuesday as they continue to investigate," she advised. "Please ask your child to report to an administrator anything that they have heard that may appear out of normal. As always, please contact us tomorrow if you have questions."

Beth Rhyne, mother to a Matoaca High 10th grader, said she had no idea what to expect when she arrived Tuesday morning. She said she discussed the threats with her daughter and whether she felt safe enough to return to class.

"We talked about it on the way here to school, I told her if you hear anything let me know," Rhyne said. "We didn’t know what to expect. We had no idea. I hope they catch whoever made the threats, otherwise I hope nothing happens that it’s just a quiet day at school."
