RICHMOND, Va. — Help is available for people whose homes were damaged by the February 24 tornado outbreak in Virginia. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development will be in Waverly, Virginia Thursday, March 10, to talk about home repair/construction loans and grants available through the government.
“Loan and grant specialists from the USDA Rural Development Courtland Area Office will accept applications, meet with clients, gather information and provide advice. Income limits apply and the property must be owner occupied to receive assistance,” Eric Peters, with the USDA Rural Development office, said.
Thursday’s event will be held between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. across from Fresh Pride Grocery Store at 233 South County Drive, Waverly, Va., 23890.
While the event is in Waverly, and timed after the recent destructive tornadoes, the loan programs are available to anyone in rural areas who needs help with their home. For more information, contact the Courtland Area Office at 757-653-2532 ext. 121.
Peters said the three main programs relevant to the people in Waverly were:
- Single Family Housing Repair Loans and Grants
- Single Family Housing Guaranteed Loan Program
- Single Family Housing Direct Home Loans
“Each of these programs has different eligibility requirements, so we will assess each interested person’s situation to find a fitting option,” Peters said. “These programs offer long-term solutions, meaning we can help people rebuild permanently. We can’t help someone buy a tarp for their roof, but we can help them buy a new roof.”
