RICHMOND, Va.— A local company opened its community coffers to help victims of the recent storms that pummeled the state.
Altria presented a $50,000 check to the American Red Cross Virginia Disaster Relief, to help those impacted by recent tornadoes and windstorms. Governor Terry McAuliffe was on hand as executives presented the check on March 4.
Seven confirmed tornadoes touched down across Virginia, on Feb. 24. The first tornado developed around 2:30 p.m. near Waverly, and tornado warnings were issued across much of central and eastern Virginia through 8:30 p.m.
The intensity on the Fujita scale ranged from EF-0 to EF-3, which means winds ranged from 65 – 165 mph.
WTVR CBS 6 Chief Meteorologist Zach Daniel called Wednesday one of the most severe weather events he has seen since he began at CBS 6 almost a decade ago; an event that has left at least four people dead and at least 50 injured.
The path the of the EF-3 tornado that hit the Middle Peninsula/Northern Neck area had a path length of 28 miles.
Help is available for people whose homes were damaged by the February 24 tornado outbreak in Virginia. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development will be in Waverly, Virginia Thursday, March 10, to talk about home repair/construction loans andgrants available through the government.
