RICHMOND, Va. — After many months of construction, Virginia Commonwealth University revealed its redesigned, 3,400-square-foot Starbucks inside Cabell Library. The Starbucks is now more than double its original size – which was only 1,600 square-feet. With seating for more than 120 guests now, the location has plenty of room for students and Richmond natives alike to enjoy a cup of coffee.
Other new features include a one-of-a-kind barista counter with exposed tree bark, modern lighting fixtures, and three espresso machines and blenders to decrease wait time for customers. The design for this Starbucks came in collaboration with Cabell’s new, sleek exterior.
“It’s been exciting to collaborate with the library, Aramark and Starbucks corporate on the Starbucks redesign,” Diane Reynolds, assistant vice president of VCU Business Services, said. “Having grown to be one of the most highly visited dining locations at VCU, we envisioned creating a Starbucks that would better serve VCU students, faculty and staff, whether they’re looking to grab and go or to meet and collaborate with colleagues or students on projects.”
And VCU students were thrilled with the expansion results.
“There is way more open space in here now,” said Ishman Alam, a VCU biology major. “People can come in here and sit down now without having to wait for a seat. I’m glad they decided to do this.”
Cabell’s original Starbucks location opened back in 2007 through VCU Business Services, having only 30 seats at the time. Several years later, the coffee shop is bustling and averages over 13,000 transactions per week.
“I’m really glad they decided to expand this place,” said Georgia Zipriani, another VCU student. “It’s so big and bright now. This was definitely a change for the better.”
The old Starbucks location in Cabell Library will be turned into additional seating for the new location. It is anticipated be ready by late April-early May.
Starbucks at Cabell Library opened Friday. It’s hours are Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m.–2 a.m.; Friday 7 a.m.– 4 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m.– 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m.– 11 p.m.
