Child dies after being struck by vehicle in Petersburg

PETERSBURG, Va. — A child has died after being struck by a vehicle in Petersburg Wednesday evening, according to Petersburg Police spokeswomen Esther Hyatt.

Police said the car accident happened around 6:11 p.m. in the 2100 block of East Washington Street.

The child was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center for injuries that are described as severe. The victim later succumbed to the injuries. No other information about the child has been released at this time.

The driver of the vehicle did stop at the scene.

Sections of East Washington Street are closed due to the accident. Drivers can use either Courthouse Road or Puddle Dock Road as a detour.

Detectives are still investigating the accident.
