CHATHAM, Va. — Local and federal law enforcement are investigating after a private military school in Virginia received a threatening message via social media purported to be linked to ISIS.

WDBJ reports Hargrave Military Academy in Pittsylvania County has stepped up security and will now allow cadets to leave the campus after getting a threatening message.

The school’s president, retired Army Brigadier General Don Broome, said the direct message was received Tuesday.

He said the school contacted law enforcement in Pittsylvania County and the investigation then grew to include other state and federal agencies.

As a result of the threat, the school has increased internal security and other law enforcement agencies have also increased patrols.

The school held assemblies with cadets and employees Thursday and also contacted parents about the situation to parents.

Broom said all 247 cadets will be allowed to go home through the weekend, if they and their parents wish.

An open house planned for this weekend has been canceled.

Broome said Hargrave is taking the threat seriously.
