RICHMOND, Va. -- A piece of tile fell on a child Friday inside a Richmond elementary school, according to School Board Chairman Jeff M. Bourne.

The accident happened at George Washington Carver Elementary.

School board member Kim Gray said the tile was two and a half by 15 inches and weighed about 5 pounds.

The child was standing in line when the 15-inch tile fell from a wall. The student was seen by a school nurse and is okay.

Gray told CBS 6 that this accident is the result of over 20 years of not putting enough money in maintenance of Richmond Public Schools.

CBS 6 previously reported about some of the conditions inside Richmond schools, such as mold in the classrooms and falling ceiling tiles.

Earlier this week, Richmond’s School Board voted to move ahead with plans to overhaul the school system’s outdated facilities.

Last week's rally

Around 100 students and teachers gathered on the steps of Richmond's City Hall Wednesday Feb. 10. The group rallied to demand more funding for Richmond Public Schools.

"Children deserve better, teachers deserve a better environment to work in," said Richmond teacher, Jen Ramachandran.

Some school board members said the need for more funding is nothing new.

As CBS 6 reported two weeks ago, board members have been asking about the $18 million that had been set aside for Richmond Public Schools for Capital funds.
