VDOT urges area drivers to avoid unnecessary travel overnight

RICHMOND, Va. -- VDOT is strongly encouraging drivers to delay unnecessary travel overnight until temperatures rise and icy patches can be treated by crews.

“Motorists should avoid travel overnight as freezing rain and wet surfaces leave a frozen glaze on pavement, making for hazardous driving conditions. Several crashes have been reported tonight,” VDOT said in a statement.

The department said crews will continue to work through the night and early morning hours to treat roads.

While the pavement appears to be clear, expect slick conditions and black ice throughout the night and overnight commute.

The department is also reminding drivers even treated roads can be difficult to drive on due to icy conditions.

Here are some tips VDOT have for drivers:

  • Limit travel overnight. Watch out for black ice, especially on bridges, ramps and overpasses.
  • Before heading out, check out road conditions by going to 511virginia.org.
  • Give yourself extra time to reach your destination, particularly for the morning commute.
  • Take it slow and leave plenty of room between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.
  • Allow slow-moving equipment crews, such as snow plow operators, the right of way.
  • No sudden breaking. Gradually come to a stop.
