PETERSBURG, Va. – Bernie Sanders will be speaking at Virginia State University, according to the university, who said Sanders will address the audience at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17. A Sanders campaign spokesperson contacted CBS 6 and said that Sanders’ visit will not be confirmed until early next week.

The university still lists his visit on their website.

Bernie Sanders visit

Sanders, an Independent from Vermont, is now in the running for the Democratic ticket.

He raised $6.4 million in the 24 hours since the polls closed in New Hampshire on Tuesday, his campaign said. The large haul, which bests the $3 million he raised after his narrow loss to Hillary Clinton in Iowa, is further evidence of the digital fundraising juggernaut his campaign has built.

The Sanders campaign said Wednesday that $2.6 million of that haul had been raised in just the four-and-a-half hours after he was declared the winner in New Hampshire.

Sanders’ supporters recently opened his Richmond campaign headquarters at 217 W. Grace St.,right across from the Richmond Police headquarters.

Pete Clerkin, Virginia campaign manager for Sanders, said, “It’s fantastic to have such a genuine candidate, and somebody’s message you can get behind.”
He said it makes it easy to attract volunteers to “get out there and talk to voters about it.”

Sanders tried to be the first one to set up shop here, but he’s far from the first one to make noise in our crucial state.
Donald Trump came here last year, followed by Jeb Bush, Ben Carson and Ted Cruz.

Soon Virginia and Richmond will be center stage as the Commonwealth is now purple, up for grabs, a swing state, and the battleground.

And unlike skirmishes in Iowa and New Hampshire, the state’s battle will last all year long. So get ready to see a whole lot of our future president, and a lot of the other hopefuls.

VSU is located at 1 Hayden Street in Petersburg. More details will be announced soon.
