RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond breweries continue to pop up, and they also keep bringing home awards.
A few local breweries earned big accolades in the RateBeer beer competitions.
RateBeer is an independent and acclaimed international site for craft beer enthusiasts. They tallied the scores of beer reviewers worldwide for their competition results.
On an international platform, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery scored three times in the Specialty Beer category, with its Gingerbread Stout (GBS) and variations of it clearly a big hit.
Christmas Morning, which is a variety of GBS poured over local, cracked coffee beans, won a gold award, with the GBS earning a silver, and the Bourbon Barrel GBS getting a bronze.
In that category, Hardywood was recognized along with beers from Bavaria, Denmark and Belgium.
Hardywood, The Answer Brewpub and Strangeways Brewing all received recognition in their subregion.
Hardywood was recognized as top brewer in the state. The Answer was recognized as best new brewer. Mekong, under the same ownership as The Answer – and known as a beer institution – was named best restaurant.
Strangeways won “best brewer tap room” in the state.
Outside of the immediate region, in Afton, the Blue Mountain Brewery and Hop Farm received recognition as the best brewpub. Aleworks, a Williamsburg brewery, also won for its Bitter Valentine, placing in the top beer category.
