Students confront icy, snowy mess upon return to classes

Posted

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Most area students returned to school Thursday, but snow covered roads are still on the minds of parents across metro Richmond.

Some parents told CBS 6, icy conditions have continued to impact people going to work and school Thursday.

Slick roads gave one Chesterfield bus driver a scare Thursday. The bus ended up facing the wrong direction and resting on the Jersey wall on Chippenham Parkway.

In Chesterfield, on Roland View Court, parents scoffed when their students had to make the trek across their icy street, which was left unplowed, to catch the bus.

One mom said her son fell and even hurt his arm.

Other parents reach out to CBS 6 when their children were faced with snow packed sidewalks on top of sidewalks that many students use to walk to school.

When Jennifer Crotts realized her children was expected to walk to Thomas Dale High School in those conditions she grew concerned.

“My first concern was, how do you send kids to school like this when there is nowhere for them to walk. They would have to walk in the right-hand lane on Route 10 and that's not safe,” she said.

CBS 6 spotted some students walking on Route 10 Thursday. Freshman Rodney Johnson admitted the walk to school was a bit tough for him. He said he fell twice along the way.

“I was walking here and had to jump up here over the mounds of snow and it was kind of icy,” he said.

Stories like that made one mom we spoke to cringe and question whether school should've been put off another day or so.

“So when these kids are injured on their way to school because of this and my kids they don't have a bus that they have to walk if they get hurt, who helps with that?” Crotts said.

CBS 6 reached out to Chesterfield County Schools for their comment, we are still waiting to hear back.
