RICHMOND, Va. — Since the snow started falling on Virginia Friday, snowplow drivers have worked around the clock to clear roads, driveways and parking lots in an effort to restore a sense of normalcy to the Commonwealth. Those snowplow drivers have their different reasons for working through the snowstorm, but one Henrico man said it was God that put him behind the wheel of a snowplow.

Adam Westbury said helping people during the snowstorm has been God's work.

Adam Westbury said helping people during the snowstorm has been God’s work.

“I’m not sure a lot of people would look at a life like mine and come up with the word blessed, but if you could see the whole picture in its totality you might understand,” Adam Westbury explained. “To be in the position I am today is nothing short of miraculous. The demonstration that God has done in my life goes beyond reason. It goes beyond logic and understanding. It simply boils down to grace.”

Grace snow

Westbury explained that at age 18 he was placed into a drug treatment program. At age 28 he was in the midst of serving 10 years in prison for robbing a bank. Now, at age 39, Westbury said he was “serving the God of my understanding.”

Recently, he revealed, an old friend saw something in him that most people could not — he saw hope.

“He saw beyond my past and recognized a true potential that only faith can serve. He took a chance on me and hired me on as a helper with his landscape company,” the Freeman High School graduate recalled. “It was the chance I needed to begin the work that I always felt I was called to do, help people.”

Little did Westbury and his old friend know that a few short weeks later, Virginia would be hit by a historic snowstorm.

“Together [we] took to the streets in the spirit of altruism. It seemed at every turn there was someone in need, a school bus driver that couldn’t get out, The Healing Place parking lot where my foundation of recovery began, CARITAS works parking lot where men discover new lives, countless people stuck in the snow of God’s opportunity,” Westbury said. “How could one not be filled with the joy and playfulness of a child when the work we are doing isn’t really work at all – it is a gift.”
