RICHMOND, Va. -- A strong winter storm will spread snow into the area from the southwest Friday morning into the afternoon.  The morning commute will likely be dry for the majority of the area, but conditions will deteriorate by late morning (far southwest) into the afternoon.  Precipitation will be in the form of snow for the majority of the area as temperatures stay near or below freezing.  Accumulations of at least a few inches will occur by evening.

Here's a look at the hour-by-hour timeline of the storm:

Warmer air will try to intrude into southeastern Virginia Friday evening into Friday night.  This may cause a wintry mix in the metro of snow changing to sleet and perhaps a brief period of freezing rain.  Areas well east and southeast of Richmond will change to plain rain for Friday night.  The Richmond metro area may even transition to rain for a brief period of time.  Snow will continue moderately to heavily for areas well north and west of Richmond.  Wind speeds will increase with some gusts over 30 mph possible.
