RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond police are conducting a death investigation in the 4900 block of Chamberlayne Avenue after multiple sources said investigators found the body of a Child in the attic of a vacant duplex.

Deborah Plumb, who lives off Chamberlayne Avenue, was stunned by the news.

"You see people every day walking up and down the street, and you don't know what they've done, what they're hiding, what they're about,” she said. “It's kind of frightening."

In the attic of the apartment building on Chamberlayne Avenue near the Henrico County line, Richmond police said they discovered human remains Saturday afternoon.

Multiple police sources tell WTVR CBS 6  the body that they found was a child's. However, RPD has not yet confirmed the information provided by sources.

"I was considering going and looking at that apartment," Plumb said.

According to plumb, no one has lived on the second floor for months now and investigators also said the apartment is vacant.

Richmond police said the body has been taken to the Medical Examiner's office to determine the cause and manner of death.

As for Plumb, she said this is the second tragedy the neighborhood has experienced in the past month. Twelve-year old Amiya Moses was hit and killed by a stray bullet around the corner from where police discovered the body in the attic.

As a result, she is considering moving.

"There is always the next something. And there is always going to be the next something in a neighborhood like this," Plumb said.

Police have not commented on how they were tipped off to the scene.

Detectives are asking anyone with any information on the case to either call Marshall Young at 804-317-6272 or Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
