Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – MLK Community Day Events

RICHMOND: The community will come together to honor the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to also talk about the state of local communities. The MLK Community Day - Can We Talk? Event is scheduled for Monday, January 18th, 12pm-2pm at the Department of Social Services at 4100 Hull Street (southside plaza).

Teens and young adults are encouraged to attend and speak out about the rash of crimes in their communities. Also, featuring P.E.A.C.E Poetry by author/poet Robert Edwards, gospel hip hop from Mr.V of Y-Me, Gang investigator/instructor Hamlet Hood, and ex-offender now entrepreneur Emanuel LaVon Johnson. Powered by Rolling for Freedom-R4F, Upsilon Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, INC., and Radio One INC.  For more details call Clovia Lawrence at 804-873-8603.

MLK Living The Dream Mass Meeting, 10am at Cedar Street Baptist Church of God 2301 Cedar Street, Church Hill, Keynote Speaker Dr. Alvin Edwards, Pastor Mt. Zion First African  Baptist Church, Charlottesville, former Mayor of Charlottesville.

The Faces of H.O.P.E. of Virginia day of service 10am at 249 East German School Road, Richmond. The  community is invited to volunteer at the organization’s new location. Service projects include assembling a basketball court in the gymnasium, arranging the clientele’s workout space and equipment, and preparing the behavioral health and nutrition class rooms to enhance clientele’s learning environment. It is The Faces of H.O.P.E.’s goal to end childhood obesity in the Richmond area and surrounding communities, and to share best practices. Peace Center Youth: Take a Stand Against Gun Violence, 2pm at the Bell Tower, (9th & Bank Streets) on the grounds of the Capitol. A dozen teenagers from the Richmond Peace Education Center presents a street theater performance and a call to end to gun violence.
