RICHMOND, Va. -- An employee at a middle school in Richmond is facing charges after being caught with marijuana and crack cocaine on campus Thursday.

It happened Thursday at 10:15 a.m. during a drug sweep at Martin Luther King Middle School in Richmond's East End.

"Christina M. Freeman, 26, of the 1000 block of Mosby Street was identified by an RPD K-9 for possible drug possession during a sweep of the MLK Middle School," Richmond Police spokesman Gene Lepley said in a news release. "RPD officers then searched her vehicle and discovered marijuana and crack cocaine."

Freeman is facing misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana and felony Possession of a Controlled Substance charges. She was booked into the Richmond City Jail and released. She is scheduled to appear in court next week.

According to the school's website, Freeman works as a security specialist at MLK.

CBS 6 found this is not Freeman’s first run in with police.

According to court records, Freeman was charged with marijuana possession in January of last year, but the charges were dismissed.

“This is news to me, and it’s surprising and shocking to me,” Shonda Harris-Muhammed, a member of the Richmond school board, said.

Harris-Muhammed and School Board Chair Jeff Bourne said the board and the superintendent were both unaware of any prior issues.

“If that is the case in evidence that we find then how did our HR practices if they failed how did they fail,” Harris-Muhammed, said.

She said the board is taking the charges very seriously and will be investigating the case fully.

“Why wasn’t that shared even if the charges were dropped,” Harris-Muhammed, said.
