Officer shoots armed suspect during attempted Chesterfield break-in

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A man is in the hospital after being shot by a police officer while he was allegedly trying to break into a home in Chesterfield County Sunday morning.

Police say they were called to a home on the 3000 block of Rycliff Avenue for a report of a suspicious person.

When officers arrived, they spotted a man armed with a knife attempting to break into the home.

“The officer pursued the suspect inside the residence during the instance the officer fired a single shot striking the subject,” Lt. Robert Kemper with Chesterfield County Police said. “He is currently in police custody and is still receiving treatment for his injuries. They appear to be non- life threatening at this time.”

The suspect was transported to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the homeowner and the suspect know each other.

Charges are pending against the suspect and the shooting being investigated.

Neither the officers nor the homeowner were injured in the incident.
