CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A Chesterfield County sixth grader is about to undergo a major life change, but thanks to support from some generous strangers, she may be able to continue her passion for sports.

Kaitlyn Soto was born with a disease called Pterygium syndrome, which is a rare disease that slows the growth of her left leg.

"It's causing my hip and back to kind of grow weird," said Kaitlyn.

Kaitlyn has defied the odds and has been very active in sports. Kaitlyn cheers, plays softball with the Huguenot Little League, and she swims with the Greenfield Gremlins.

Now the 11 year old is preparing for something that would terrify most adults. Kaitlyn must have her leg amputated.

"It would be more helpful if I got it amputated rather than have more problems in the future," she said.

Kaitlyn said she is nervous, but she trusts the doctors. To keep up her active lifestyle she'll need a special prosthetic, but her mom Cynthia Carter said there was a problem.

"The insurance won't cover the kind that she needs," said Carter.

Medical fundAfter talking to some friends on Facebook, she decided to start a GoFundMe page for her daughter, a decision that paid off quickly.

Someone named Patricia Beyers donated $6,450 and helped them reach their goal of $7,500 in a few short days.

"We've tried to look her up," Carter said.

But she hasn’t had any luck so far.

Kaitlyn's mom has a special message for the mystery woman.

"Thank you so much and I would like to meet you,” she said.

Carter said the extra money raised will be saved to pay for future procedures and prosthetic legs that Kaitlyn will need as she grows.
