RICHMOND, Va. -- A group of local fourth graders received a big surprise Tuesday, when some Christmas elves surprised their classroom.

Workers from the VCU Health’s Perioperative Surgical Services Department snuck inside of Richmond’s George Mason Elementary School with over 20 winter coats in hand.

School Assistant Principal Tommy Devaughn escorted them to Miss Talley's unsuspecting class.

Fourth grader Kush Sailes said his class is very appreciative of the gifts.

"Today someone gave us coats so that we could be warm this winter and that we won't have to be cold," said Sailes.

Sabrina Gregory with VCU Health helped organize the surprise.

“We created this committee and we wanted to help our young children grow and let them know we are here for them to support our community,” said Gregory. "We want students to grow up and show acts of kindness to others and be compassionate towards those who cannot help themselves."

A total of 22 winter coats were donated to Ms. Talley's fourth grade class.
