DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. -- A man was cited with a traffic violation and suffered bumps and bruises after he drove his SUV into a Dinwiddie pond. Philip Hoylman said he and his brother were headed to Food Lion Sunday night to buy brownie mix for his daughter when another vehicle drove into his lane along the  12300 block of Courthouse Road.

Hoylman said he lost control of his vehicle when he swerved to avoid the other driver. His SUV ended up in a pond about 30 yards off the road. He said when he climbed out of the window to swim back to shore, he started to swim in the wrong direction.

"My brother started calling for me and I did not think I was going to make it to the shore at first. If it had not been for Chris calling my name and giving me a direction to go I would not have made it out of there," he said.

Virginia State Police responded to the crash to help close the road while a tow truck fished the SUV from the water.
