EMPORIA, Va. – Suspects have been named in the attempted murder of Emporia Police Officer William King. Police issued a "be on the lookout," which said the suspects are considered armed and dangerous.
As of 11 a.m. on Dec. 11, one suspect, Calvin Evans, has been taken into custody.
There was a violent fracas at an Emporia nightclub on Dec. 5, that left George Cain III dead and an Emporia officer wounded. The night of the shooting, police arrested 26-year-old Christopher Rayshawn Powell, and charged him with Cain's murder. He is being held without bond.
Six days later, the department obtained arrest warrants for Rakei D. Stokes of the 200 Block of West End Boulevard and Calvin L. Evans of the 300 Block of West End Boulevard, in connection with the attempted murder of Officer King.
Detective Jerry Wright said the warrants were issued after five days of sifting through evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Stoke, 25, is charged with attempted capital murder, conspiracy to commit capital murder, unlawfully shooting, and possession of firearm after being a convicted felon.
Stoke’s criminal record goes back to at least 2009, when he was charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle. The charges were nolle prosequi, as was anther charge in 2011.
He was sentenced to 10 years in 2010, for felony assault, with severe injury, but all 10 years were suspended, according to court records.
Evans, a 24-year-old male was charged with conspiracy to commit capital murder of Officer King.
The Emporia Police Department, with the assistance by the Virginia State Police, United States Marshall Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Greensville County Sheriff’s Office served multiple search warrants in the City of Emporia and Greensville County attempting to locate the suspects and find additional evidence.
As of this time, Stokes and Evans are still at large and should be considered armed and dangerous.
Emporia Police Chief Ricky Pinksaw told CBS 6 that the incident started around 1:50 a.m. when Powell and Cain began arguing at the Smoove Operators night club on North Main Street. Pinksaw said that is when Powell pulled out a gun and shot Cain in the torso.
Cain was rushed to Southern Virginia Regional Hospital where he later died.
Pinksaw said officer William King was in the process of arresting Powell when he was shot in the leg. He was also rushed to Southern Virginia Regional Hospital before being med-flighted to VCU Medical Center, where he is currently listed as being in stable condition.
Cain's family reached out to CBS 6 and said that he is the second son his mother lost to violent crimes in the past few years.
They said Cain graduated Greensville County High in 2012 and had a job and a family.

"He was a hard working respectful young man who valued his family and his children," said his cousin Marcus Broadnax. "He was always there to give advice and steer other young people in the right direction of decision making he left behind 3 children and a wife with one child on the way."

Our thoughts and prayers continue for the family and friends of George Cain III, and Officer William King. Officer King was released from MCV-VCU hospital on December 9, 2015 and is at home resting.
