RICHMOND, Va. – VCU fans had a winning day when the Rams took on the ODU Monarchs.

Not only did the team get a 9-point win against an old rival, but everyone in the arena that day won free pizza, thanks to the sharp shooting of sophomore Malik Bowden.

Bowden made a layup, hit a free throw, drained a 3-pointer and drilled a half-court shot in less than 30 seconds. That’s what it takes to win the contest, which is sponsored by Papa John’s.

The mass communications major has been playing basketball his whole life.

He said he was just lost in the moment.

“I just shot the layup, free throw and 3 pointer like I know how, and the half-court shot I just put some touch on it and let it fly -- and by the grace of God it went in,” Bowden said.

Alumni Phil Hillier, who in the past rebounded for a contestant, said they try to make it harder to win than it used to be, with more challenging rebounds.

But Bowden, who lives and breathes basketball, overcame the odds – much to the delight of those at the game.
