CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- One person suffered a critical injury and 32 people suffered non-life threatening injuries when an Abbott Trailways charter bus crashed Sunday night in Richmond, according to Chesterfield County Fire and EMS spokesman Lt. Jason Elmore said. Elmore said it was very fortunate that the injuries were not more serious.

The bus was headed from Richmond to universities west of town including Virginia Tech and Radford University, Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, he added.

The bus was carrying 49 passengers at the time of the crash.

The ramp from Powhite Parkway south to Chippenham Parkway south was closed until after midnight. The left lane on Powhite Parkway south was also closed.

This is a developing story.
