PETERSBURG, Va. — Petersburg Police has confirmed over $13,000 is missing from their evidence room.

They said the money, totaling $13,356, is tied to three cases. The department made the discovery after an August audit.

In a statement, police said the funds have not yet been accounted for, but at this point it appears to be procedural and clerical issue rather than criminal.

Three officers assigned to that unit have since been transferred.

The department said they have continued to implement measures to improve evidence and property procedures in its detective division.

Petersburg Chief John I. Dixon, III. said in a statement:

“Petersburg police commits itself to transparency and accountability. We work very hard to ensure the integrity of our officers. Our aim has always been to provide the best service to our residents, visitors and businesses.”

The department said they will conclude their internal audit before they seek outside council to aid in any external investigation. The department said they will report findings after their investigations are complete.
