ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. — Excessive speed and alcohol may have been factors in a crash that killed a Palmyra man early Thursday morning. The driver, identified as 33-year-old Christopher Gormus, was not wearing a seat belt when his car ran off Richmond Road and hit a tree, investigators said.

“A 1990 Toyota Camery was traveling eastbound in a straight area of Richmond Road when the vehicle crossed the center line, then crossed the westbound lane, left the roadway and struck a tree, head on,” Albemarle investigators said. “The single car crash happened at 2:59 a.m. in the 4400 block of Richmond Road.”

The investigation is ongoing.
