RICHMOND, Va. -- The City of Richmond paid employees more than $1.7 million in overtime during the nine days the UCI Road World Championships took over town in September, according to city officials. Richmond City Council will receive a full report on race week overtime pay at its regularly scheduled Monday night meeting.
Most of the overtime pay, about $1.3 million, was paid out to police officers during the race. The police overtime pay was about $200,000 over budget. Fire and EMS overtime payouts came in under budget at around $110,000, according to sources familiar with the numbers. The rest of the overtime money went to public works and utility crews.
A complete economic impact study of the UCI Road World Championships is scheduled to be released in December or January. Event organizers said the races would generate $3.8 million in tax revenue for the city in 2015. Organizers projected 645,000 spectators watched the races over nine days.
