PORTLAND, Oregon -- She thought she hit the big jackpot and won more than $8 million. That is until the Washington state casino where she was playing slots told her it was all just a big mistake. Managers at Lucky Eagle Casino told Veronica Castillo the slow machine that displayed the $8 million jackpot was broken.
"My first thought was, how many people has this happened to, they think they won, then going away empty handed," Castillo said.
Castillo said she put $100 into the machine and then saw she won more than $8 million.
"I was very excited, happy. Then I couldn't believe it," she said when describing the moment casino staff came over and told her the machine had malfunctioned. "They shut off the machine, took it away, printed out a ticket and gave me $80."
Most casino slot machines bear a sticker that explains malfunctions void all pays and plays.
"We have back up systems in the machines that also record what's on the screens that can accurately depict what malfunctioned," the casino's CEO explained.
Castillo plans to hire an attorney.
