CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- More than five years after her murder and three years after his conviction, video of the George Huguely's interrogation following the death of his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love was made public. The video, obtained by WVIR in Charlottesville, showed that when the University of Virginia lacrosse player was initially questioned by police, he appeared to not know Love was dead.

Huguely killed Love in May 2010 after he broke into her off-campus apartment and repeatedly slammed her head into a wall. In the video, he admitted to knocking down her door in order to talk to her. He also said he grabbed her by the neck, but never strangled her.

"I do believe his intention was to go over then and talk to her at first," Charlottesville Police detective Lisa Best told WVIR. "I think that with the alcohol and his temper, once he got in there, I think once she told him she didn’t want to talk with him, I think that’s when it escalated, at that moment."

At one point during Best's interrogation, Huguely demanded to see Love. That is when investigators told him Love was dead.

George Huguely: I want to see her!
Detective Lisa Best: George, look at me. She is dead.
George Huguely: How is she dead?
George Huguely: Oh. No. No. I didn't know. She's not dead. It didn't get out of control. She’s not dead. She’s not dead. She’s not dead. No way. There’s no way. I didn't do it. There’s no way. There’s no way.

"It was very sad," Detective Best told WVIR. "You know, Yeardley’s life had been taken away from her and George making a very stupid decision."

Huguely, 28, is serving a 23-year prison sentence. He is scheduled to be released from prison in 2029. Neither Huguely nor Love's family wished to comment on the interrogation video.
