RICHMOND, Va. — The woman accused of attacking her son’s kindergarten teacher inside a Linwood Holton Elementary School bathroom was charged with simple assault, according to Richmond Police. Elishia Branch, 33, was arraigned on the misdemeanor charge Tuesday and released on her own recognizance.

Branch attacked her son’s teacher inside the school before the school day started last Wednesday, police said. Sources familiar with the attack said the mother locked the teacher in the classroom and repeatedly slammed her head into the concrete floor.

Students did not witness the attack, which was described as unprovoked.

The teacher suffered serious injuries. She was able to get away from her attacker when she kicked the woman in the stomach. The teacher has not yet returned to the classroom.

Branch left the school following the attack and drove to a family member’s home where she then allegedly assaulted a relative. She was taken to a mental health facility where she underwent a mental evaluation, which delayed her being charged with a crime.

The simple assault charge indicates no weapons were used in the attack.

Branch is due back in court in December.
