Richmond man found in road with gunshot wound was in late 20s

RICHMOND, Va. – Police identified a homicide victim who died after a late-night shooting over the weekend in South Richmond.

On Sunday, at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers were called to the 2500 block of Powell Road for a report of a person down in the street.

Officers arrived and found Mark A. Jefferson, 28, of the 900 block of Kingsway Road, unresponsive in the roadway and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Residents interviewed over the weekend said they are saddened by gun violence and remember a time when things were different in the neighborhood.

“When I was coming up, might get into a little fight and brush it off and tomorrow you guys are best friends,” said Lamarr Harris, who owns a business in the neighborhood. “But now if you get into a squabble somebody goes and gets a gun and comes and kills you.”
