DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. – Sources tell WTVR CBS 6 that a couple from Pennsylvania and their dog were killed in a fiery wreck that shutdown I-85 north in Dinwiddie County Saturday afternoon.

Virginia State Police said the wreck happened just before 3:25 p.m. at mile marker 46.

"The trooper's investigation revealed that a 1997 Ford Pickup was traveling north on Interstate 85 in the left lane when the truck ran off the road to the left struck a tree and overturned catching fire," Sgt. Steve Vick with Virginia State Police said. "The two occupants of the 1997 Ford died at the scene, its unknown if they were wearing seatbelts."

The victims, who died at the scene, were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for positive identification and autopsy.

Their names are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

VDOT reported traffic was diverted off the interstate to McKenney Highway/Route 40 at Exit 42 for more than three hours. The interstate reopened around 7:45 p.m.
