FBI warns about phone scam in Richmond

Posted

RICHMOND, Va. — There is a phone scam in Central Virginia that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is warning Richmonders about.

The Richmond FBI said it has received multiple calls from community members worried about a person calling them and claiming to represent the U.S. government before demanding thousands of dollars. If denied, the caller threatens arrest.

The number may come across caller ID as a number for an FBI Field Office.

Adam S. Lee, Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the Richmond Division of the FBI, issued the warning.

Lee said the FBI does not call private citizens about money. He said that people receiving this call should hang up immediately and call authorities. Do not follow the caller’s instructions, but instead follow these steps:

  • Notify your banking institutions.
  • Contact the three major credit bureaus and request an alert be put on your file.
  • Contact your local law enforcement agency if you feel you are in immediate danger.
  • File a complaint at www.IC3.gov.
