HANOVER COUNTY, Va. -- One person was killed and several other people were hurt in a crash that involved multiple vehicles along Mountain Road (Route 33) in Montpelier, just after 8 a.m. Wednesday.

A 2006 GMC Yukon was traveling east on Mountain Road and a 2000 Peterbilt Tractor hauling a 2005 Utility trailer was traveling west on Mountain Road, according to the preliminary investigation. The Yukon crossed the center line and struck the rear wheel of the Utility trailer, which causes it to jack-knife. The tractor-trailer collided head-on with a 2015 Mazda 4-door sedan that was also traveling east on Mountain Road.

Hanover crash 04

The driver of the 2015 Mazda sedan was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.  The name of the deceased has not been released until the next-of-kin can be notified.

The driver and only occupant of the Peterbilt Tractor was transported to VCU Medical Center via Med Flight.  The driver and passenger of the GMC Yukon were transported to VCU Medical Center by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators continue to collect and evaluate evidence in an effort to determine all factors leading up to this crash.
