SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. -- Two people were killed in an early morning house fire in Spotsylvania, Deputy Fire Chief Jay Cullinan said. A 911 call from a neighbor brought fire crews to the home on the 11700 block of Post Oak Road at about 2:18 a.m.
"The first units arrived at 2:27 a.m. to find a house well-involved in fire. Crews conducted an aggressive attack on the fire, simultaneously conducting a search for occupants, while tankers hauled water from a hydrant located miles away," Cullinan said. "Within 10 minutes of arrival, crews located and removed one female occupant who was not breathing, and began to initiate life-saving efforts. The patient went into cardiac arrest during transport, and later died at the hospital."
Fire crews later found a second person in the home. That person had already died in the fire.
"One firefighter sustained minor burn injuries and was treated on the scene," Cullinan said. "The cause and origin of the fire is currently under investigation."
It took fire crews about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control.
