PETERSBURG, Va. — Petersburg Deptartment of Public Utilities is working to repair a major water main break on Halifax St. near Peabody Middle School in Petersburg.

The department has closed Halifax Street from Lee Avenue to Shore Street for the rest of the night for maintenance work. Detours are in place.

A public utilities official tells CBS 6 the break is under control, but not yet fixed. They said they now have to wait on contractor to finish repairs Friday. That could take up to six hours.

Residents will experience low pressure in the area of Halifax Street and Mistletoe Streets for the next few hours. The official said everyone should have water now and the pressure should increase overnight.

The department said a construction company working on the road today hit a water line causing the major leak. Crews have been on scene since 3:30 Thursday afternoon.

Several fire hydrants around the area were opened to release pressure.
