NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina — Trapped in her home by flood water, a Charleston, South Carolina woman was delivered to the hospital by canoe so doctors could deliver her baby. When Tyshenequia McLean went into labor Sunday, there was no way she could drive to the hospital, nor could an ambulance pick her up. Storms had dumped more than two feet of rain on parts of the state, washing out roads and trapping people in their homes.

Firefighters who responded to McLean’s home got creative and used a canoe to pull her to dry land. An ambulance drove her the rest of the way.

“I can honestly say in 15 years I think that’s the first patient I’ve ever had that came to Trident via canoe,” nurse Erin LaRoche told WCIV.

Nine hours after her arrival, came the arrival of baby Elijah. Both mother and baby are doing well. McLean expects to be able to return home with Elijah on Wednesday.
