RICHMOND, Va. — Heavy rains and flooding will impact Virginia over the next two days.

“We are going to see a significant amount of rainfall throughout the entire Commonwealth of Virginia; we will have flooding, we are going to see trees down, we will see power lost,” said Governor Terry McAuliffe at a Thursday press conference.

The CBS 6 Weather Authority says rain will turn more widespread and heavier later Thursday into Friday.  Wind speeds will pick up with gusts 25-30+ for central Virginia and 35-40+ near the coast, a pattern which will last into the weekend.  Temperatures will hold in the 50s during the day. You can see the hour by hour rain forecast here.

“My message to everyone in the Commonwealth is to be prepared,” McAuliffe said. “This one is definitely going to hit us, this one that is coming this afternoon.”

SIX THINGS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW TO PREPARE:

  1. Make an emergency supply kit to include essential supplies that will last at least three days.
    1. Supply kits should include a battery-powered radio and extra batteries, non-perishable food and water, toiletries, flashlights, a first aid kit and medications. Also, include items needed for infants, seniors, and pets. You may want to keep a second kit in your car in case you are told to evacuate. Also, talk to your family and get them ready.
  2. Have a full tank of gas.
  3. Get at least a small amount of cash. If there are widespread power outages, you may need to rely on cash.
  4. Have a cell phone with a full charge with you. Charge laptops (in case you want to watch a movie) and charge any backup cell chargers you may need.
  5. Clear trees as necessary. Clean gutters. Bring in or secure any object that may be blown about by high winds, including plants, patio furniture, garden décor, etc.
  6. Download needed apps that help you stay informed if you lose power. We suggest WTVR CBS 6 appsand the Red Cross Emergency app.
