LOUSIA COUNTY, Va. -- Fire officials are investigating how a fire started at an abandoned building in the town of Mineral. The fire burned the old Mineral Elementary school, built in 1910, located at 70 Louisa Avenue.

There were no reports of injuries.

Old, dry books contributed to the blazing flames that grew higher and higher.

Officials are investigating and said it will take some time before they release their findings.

The building was erected in 1910, but has not been a school for many years.  Longtime Mineral residents said the building serves as a de facto landmark for many in town.  They added they are saddened to see it reduced to a pile of ruble.
