CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A 28-year-old man is facing three counts of first-degree murder after police discovered three bodies inside a Chesterfield County home Wednesday evening.

Officials said Chesterfield officers received a request from Richmond police to check the welfare of the residents at a home in the 3200 block of Walmsley Boulevard just before 8 p.m. Wednesday.  Officers discovered the bodies of three adults inside the home.

"Carl V. Hughes IV, 28, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder in relation to the incident," Liz Caroon with the Chesterfield County Police Department said.  "Hughes, of the 3200 block of Walmsley Boulevard, was known to all three victims."

Cheyenne Gray sat on her best friend's stoop Thursday morning in tears waiting to hear if her friend is one of the three people Chesterfield police say were murdered Wednesday night.

"Everybody is texting me Facebook messaging me...I just had to come here," Gray said,

Chesterfield Police said Hughes IV killed three people at a home on Walmsley Blvd before threatening to commit suicide on the Lee Bridge in Richmond.

Gray said it's his mom, dad and sister who live in the house – but, police haven’t confirmed that or the identity of the victims.

"I don't know why he did this I don't know what was going through his head," Gray said,

Gray said Hughes had disagreements with his family and had a drug problem.

Chesterfield court records show Hughes has two kids, he worked as a music performer, he had at least three different addresses since 2012, he was convicted of stealing a man's credit card to buy cigarettes, and he was convicted of marijuana possession.

Still, Gray said she never thought Hughes could hurt someone.

"He never seemed violent to the point that you need to get help," Gray said.

Officials said officers are working to notify the victims’ next of kin.

The victims’ identities and their relationship to the suspect will be released once those notifications have taken place," police wrote in a news release.

Hughes is being held at Riverside Regional Jail.
